Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust: What we do

As a group dedicated solely to the support of patients with Thyroid Cancer we can offer fellow thyroid cancer patients who wish to join us the following:

Use of the dedicated helpline to speak to someone who has had the disease.
E-mail and telephone contact with group members to share experiences
A "buddy" to help you through the stages of surgery, Radioiodine treatment and follow up
Hospital visits
Regular support group meetings
Access to reliable up-to-date written information about the disease
Access to a group member in clinic at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC), Newcastle General Hospital

On-site Clinical Support

The Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust is unique in being able to offer on-site clinical support to Thyroid Cancer patients from a fellow patient.

Kate Farnell, who founded the group, works in Dr U K Mallick's clinic on Monday mornings at NCCC, Newcastle General Hospital.

All patients are given the opportunity to meet with Kate during their hospital appointment for information, advice and support.

They are also offered accompanied visits to:

the Medical Physics Department to see the scanning equipment used in Thyroid Cancer

the Iodine Suite (treatment room) on ward 37 where patients will spend three to four days when having their treatment.

Patients are given time to ask any questions or share any concerns with Kate who has gone through the same treatment protocol herself.

We are very pleased to be able to offer this service which has proved very beneficial to patients.
