Beautiful Bethan Travers was born at the end of April. Proud parents Rachel and Dave are 'crazy in love' with their gorgeous girl.
Many congratulations!
[May 2008]
In May of last year Butterfly sought its first Patron. It was very important to us that this person had strong connections with the North East (for obvious reasons!).
We were delighted and honoured when His Grace the Duke of Northumberland agreed to do this for us.
Our founder had always had a second patron in mind and he/she had to be the top medical professional in the UK caring for people with Thyroid Cancer.
This person was Dr Clive Harmer FRCR FRCP.
Throughout the last seven years, ever since the inception of Butterfly, Kate knew that Dr Harmer was the perfect candidate for 'the job' but would he accept?
Following the Key Advances master class in Thyroid Cancer in December 2007, over dinner and after a few glasses of wine, Kate finally plucked up the courage to ask Dr Harmer if he could consider becoming our Patron. He said yes!
We are absolutely delighted and could not possibly have a better Patron for Butterfly. Many, many thanks to Dr Harmer. [January 2008]
We are delighted to announce that Butterfly was part of the winning team in the recent Hospital Doctor of the Year Awards presented at the Hilton in Park Lane, London.
The Thyroid Cancer Care Team from Newcastle won the best oncology care team award for the entire UK which is an outstanding achievement for all concerned.
Many members of the team are involved with Butterfly, particularly Kate Farnell, Dr Ujjal Mallick, Dr Petros Perros and Mr Frank Stafford. [January 2008]
On 18th August 2007, Rachel and Dave tied the knot at Chillingham Castle in Northumberland in front of family and friends.
The weather wasn't kind but nothing could spoil such a happy day: the lavish reception was fabulous and the speeches excellent.
After spending their wedding night in the Castle's Bridal Suite (which is haunted!) the happy couple jetted off to Thailand for their honeymoon.
Congratulations Mr and Mrs Travers! [August 2007]
We are delighted to announce that Kate Farnell won the People's
Award at the Pfizer Excellence in Oncology Awards on 8th October.
Oncology consultants, surgeons, nurses and pharmacists from all over the UK attended the Birmingham Science Museum to witness the unveiling of the winners of the first ever national P5 Excellence in Oncology Awards.
The P5 Awards were created by the British Oncological Association (BOA), with an educational grant provided by Pfizer Oncology, to recognise and reward innovation and best practice in oncology management, education and care in the United Kingdom (UK). The awards ceremony was opened by BOA’s President, Professor Robert Coleman, and hosted by ITV's news presenter, Nicholas Owen.
Professor Coleman, Chair of the Judging Committee, was thrilled with the success of the awards: "Being a part of these awards has been truly inspirational. We received a high number of exceptional entries, and it really was fantastic to see the great work that is going on in the British oncology arena".
Kate was nominated by her Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Dr U K Mallick, and Nurse Consultant, Maria Vincent - both members of the Cancer Care Team at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at Newcastle General Hospital. [October 2006]
On 20th May 2006 the 'Butterfly Baby' got married (so-called because she was the first and youngest patient to be supported
by Butterfly North East).
Katherine and Stephen said "I do" on Saturday 20th May at St Charles' Church in Gosforth.
A reception at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art on the Quayside was enjoyed by family and friends.
The loved up pair went to Jamaica on honeymoon. They met just three months before Katherine was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and have been together ever since. A very happy ending! [June 2006]
